At 7 pm on Tuesday in Jerusalem a bilateral meeting between the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and US National Security adviser John Bolton began that was expected to last for more than 3 hours.
Before it, there had been consultations at the level of the deputies of Patrushev and Bolton for almost hour. The main subject of the negotiations was regulation in Syria and safety of Middle Eastern region on the whole.
For Patrushev and Bolton it has been the third meeting since 2018. Last year they had negotiations in August in Geneva that was lasting for 5 hours, and in October in Moscow. According to results, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation claimed that there were constructive talks where the American side laid no charges to the Russian Federation. The range of questions was consisted of almost all the problematic issues of both countries: along with Syria, such issues as the situation in Ukraine and Afghanistan, deals about the limitation of strategic offensive arms and elimination of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces were raised.
Patrushev invited his colleague to Moscow for a new session of negotiations. Both sides exchanged suggestions which have become the subject for discussion in Moscow and Geneva. It was planned that Patrushev and Bolton would adopt a joint statement but it was not agreed because of the US attempts to ament a paragraph about intrusion from Russia into presidential elections in the USA.
The contacts of Patrushev and Bolton have gained the additional context according to possible meeting of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and the American Leader Donald Trump in the G20 Osaka summit. That is why that one of the issues of the current negotiations between Patrushev and Bolton will be strategic offensive arms control.
