According to The National Interest, The United States could significantly improve its relations with Moscow by creating US – Russia alliance against Beijing. Russia would more naturally line up with Europe and the United States than China. The countries neighboring China are not strong enough to resist its growing influence, so the United States could use Moscow to contain Beijing’s power. The “best and easy” way to do that could be modus vivendi – a temporary agreement that can later be replaced by a permanent contract.
Any decision, however, requires recognizing that Crimea is not going back to Ukraine. The United States can offer to stop the “NATO expansion”, ending the alliance’s steady advance toward Russia. Moscow in return, could stop supporting the self-proclaimed republics of the DPR and the LPR.
The agreement between the United States and Russia wouldn’t not smooth out all conflicts, but contacts between the two countries could normalize.
