Marshae Jones, five-month pregnant Alabama woman, was shot in the stomach and later charged in death of the fetus, reported the New York Times Thursday.
The incident happened in December between Ms. Jones and Ebony Jemison who got in a fight over the father of the unborn child. Ms. Jemison shot Ms. Jones in the stomach and the fetus did not survive. The police detained Ms. Jemison and charged her with manslaughter, yet later dismissed the charge.
“The only true victim in this was the unborn baby,” said Lt. Danny Reid of the Pleasant Grove Police Department. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.”
Lt. Reid went on saying that “when a five-month pregnant woman initiates a fight and attacks another person, I believe some responsibility lies with her as to any injury to her unborn child. That child is dependent on its mother to try to keep it from harm, and she shouldn’t seek out unnecessary physical altercations.”
Alabama abortion rights groups supported Ms. Jones and claimed the case to be an example of harsh treatment of people of color.
A pregnant woman was shot in the stomach during a fight. The shooting caused her pregnancy to end. She has been indicted for manslaughter. This is how people– especially women of color– are already being punished & having their pregnancies criminalized. https://t.co/lVll81dOtC
