FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the US Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday and claimed that Russia is set to meddle in the U.S. 2020 Presidential election, reported Reuters Tuesday.
When Senator Lindsey Graham asked about Russia and whether it poses a threat to the US election despite all the sanctions imposed against it, Wray stated: “The Russians are absolutely intent on trying to interfere with our elections.”
“My view is until they stop, they [Russians] haven’t been deterred enough.”
Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is due to testify today about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible obstruction of justice by the US president Donald Trump, concluded that Russia interfered in the US election and charged a number of Russians and Russian companies. Based on Mueller’s findings the US imposed sanctions against Russia and its intelligence officials and is now considering new tougher election-related restrictions.
When asked if the FBI had the authority and resources to deal with the threat of alleged Russian interference, Wray said that everything is prepared on their side and now depends on whether Congress approves bureau’s request for additional funds.
“From our lane, of course, at the FBI, our primary focus is on the malign foreign influence piece, and there’s a separate election infrastructure piece that DHS deals with the states. We feel that we have significant resources devoted to the foreign influence piece, and the president’s budget that’s currently up before the Congress asks for additional resources to help us do that.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously denied all the accusations and said that he had never interfered and has no intentions to interfere in any foreign elections.
