Cummings says “no doubt” Trump is racist

Elijah Cummings, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, claimed that the US President Donald Trump was a racist, reported The Hill Sunday.

Cummings appeared on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning. When asked whether he thought Trump was a racist, Cummings said there was “no doubt about it.”

“I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but when I think about what he said to these young ladies who are merely trying to bring excellence to government … when I hear those things it takes me back.”

Cummings said Trump’s statement that the four congresswomen “can leave” the US and “go back” to their countries reminded him of his own experience of being told the same thing. “I heard the same kind of chants, ‘Go home, you don’t belong here,’” recalled Cummings. “I’m not the only person of color who has had those kind of experiences.”

President Trump’s tweets about four Democratic Representatives, women of color, were condemned by the US House of Representatives Tuesday, however, Trump denies that his comments were “racist.” Sunday morning he once again claimed that the “squad” members, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib, were “not capable of loving our Country.”

Cummings defended the “squad” and said that the congresswomen are, in fact, very hard-working and do love America. “I interact with them every day,” he said, as three of four freshmen, AOC, Tlaib and Pressley, are members of the Oversight Committee. “These are women who love their country.”

“They work very hard and they want to move us toward that more perfect union that our founding fathers talked about.”
