US President Donald Trump, who will be hosting the G7 Summit in 2020, suggested the event takes place at his Miami golf resort, reported Evening Standard.
On the last day of the G7 & in Biarritz, France, Trump said that his Doral golf resort is a perfect place for the Summit as it is close to the airport and would be very convenient for all the delegations.
“We have a series of magnificent buildings … very luxurious rooms,” Trump said. “We have incredible conference rooms, incredible restaurants, it’s like – it’s like such a natural.”
However, experts say that the event cannot take place at the President’s property as that would be ethics violation and a conflict of interest.
“This is him making it perfectly mandatory that they stay at his resort,” said one former official.
Yet President Trump says it’s not about profiting, it’s about providing delegations with the right place. “It’s not about me,” Trump stated. “It’s about getting the right location. I’m not going to make any money. I don’t want to make money. I don’t care about making money.” He also claimed that the Us government officials have been visiting various locations and they also push for Doral.
The Washington Post reported earlier that President Trump’s property in Miami was “severely underperforming” and its members were quitting the club and forced to wait to get refunds. According to one of the Doral members, some former members are forced to wait for more than 5 years. Therefore, if the G7 takes place at the Doral, the club would benefit a lot.
