ICE Director on deporting migrants: We have no choice

News

US ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is to begin deporting thousands of migrants, who already have their deportation orders issued and are still staying in the US, NPR reported Friday. According to people with knowledge of the matter, the ICE is planning raids starting on Sunday in 10 US cities.

Many have criticized Trump administration and ICE for taking such measures. Attorney Letitia James said that it was “an immoral an unconscionable act.”

“This is an immoral and unconscionable act by a president and an administration hell-bent on dividing our country. As New York’s top law enforcement officer, I can assure New Yorkers we will do everything in our power to fight back against these inhumane policies.”

In an interview with NRP Mark Morgan, ICE Director, commented on the planned raids and said that his duty was “not to look at the political optics, or the will the American people”. “That’s for the politicians to decide,” he added.  “What the American people should want us to do as law enforcement officials is to enforce the rule of law and maintain the integrity of that system.”

“They’ve had due process, they’ve had access to attorneys, they’ve had access to interpreters. Majority of them don’t even show up. And then when they didn’t show up, they received orders of removal in absentia. We have no choice.”
