Jim Enos Clyburn, House Majority Whip, made comments about impeachment proceedings on Sunday night, however, Monday he walked back, media reports say.
Clyburn said that impeachment proceedings will certainly take place and Democrats are in a process of “laying the groundwork.” However, in a Monday night interview he said it was possible to avoid impeachment and he’s “probably farther away from impeachment than anybody in our caucus.” Monday morning Clyburn held a meeting with Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker, where Pelosi confirmed that she opposes impeachment. Experts say Pelosi won’t be able to “Hold the line against impeachment” for too long as there are more and more Democrats call for the proceedings to begin as soon as possible.
According to media reports, Clyburn was one of those who previously supported the effort to remove the US President Donald Trump back in December of 2017.
Steny Hoyer, House Majority Leader, when asked whether the House was going to launch impeachment proceedings, said “we’re not getting into that.”
Yet, Democrats have already taken an aggressive action and scheduled a vote to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt.
