Speaking in Beijing, President Vladimir Putin called the sentence
of Maria Butina “an outrage” and “travesty of justice”
“It is unclear why she was convicted, what crime she committed,” Putin said.
Vladimir Putin also said that Maria Butina’s sentence looked like the US law enforcement attempt to save face.
“They grabbed her and threw the girl behind the bars, but there’s nothing to charge her with. But they sentenced her to 18 months so it would not look completely nonsensical, to show that she is guilty of something,” the president said.
Maria Butina, a former graduate student at American University and pro-gun enthusiast was pleaded guilty in acting as a foreign agent for Russia without registering in the United States. Basically, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her attempts to improve US-Russia relations.
Russia’s foreign ministry on Friday has called Butina’s sentence “politically motivated,” saying in a statement: “Our countrywoman was sentenced only because she is a citizen of Russia.”
