Number of victims of police shootings in US is rising

News

US House Judiciary Committee, led by a Democratic Chairman Jerrold Nadler, started an investigation on how Trump administration handles police shootings. The Committee sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr, requesting documents on how the police shootings and using excessive force cases are handled by the Justice Department. Democrats want to review all documents starting early 2017, when President Trump took the office.

According to media reports cited in the letter, there were nearly 1,000 people killed last year and 265 in the first quarter of this year. “Despite continuing concerns from civil rights and community-based organizations, the department has sharply curtailed its statutory role in identifying and eradicating civil rights abuses by law enforcement,” they letter says.

Barr was given time until the beginning of June to comply with the request. Justice Department did not comment on the matter.
