Patrick Shanahan, US Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense who has headed the Department since the resignation of James Mattis, former Secretary, resigned, media reports say.
President Trump posted on Twitter that Shanahan “decided not to go forward” and would “devote more time to his family.”
….I thank Pat for his outstanding service and will be naming Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, to be the new Acting Secretary of Defense. I know Mark, and have no doubt he will do a fantastic job!

According to a report by USA Today, the main reason for the decision was the FBI investigating a “violent domestic dispute from nine years ago between Shanahan and his ex-wife as a part of a background investigation ahead of his possible confirmation hearing to be permanent defense chief.”
While President Trump is looking for a candidate, Mark Esper will take the post. Experts say that these events come at “a particularly bad time,” as tensions with China, Iran and North Korea are rising.
