Shane M. Piche, 26, a former school bus driver from New York, pleaded guilty to raping a 14-year-old girl, yet will not go to jail.
Jefferson County Court sentenced Piche to 10 years’ probation and required him to pay $375 in court fees and a $1000 special sex offender registration fee as he will be registered as a Level 1 sex offender, even though the district attorney’s office had requested a Level 2 designation. According to the Judge James P. McClusky, Piche had no prior arrests and is considered to be at low risk of committing a crime again.
Piche met the girl through his job, but the assault happened at his residence. He was also charged with unlawfully dealing with a child and endangering the welfare of a child providing her alcohol, The Watertown Daily Times reported.
As a result of the sexual assault Piche no longer works at the bus company and is not allowed to be alone with anyone under 17 years old, with some exceptions.
“He took something from my daughter she will never get back and has caused her to struggle with depression and anxiety,” said victim’s mother. She added she wished Piche served jail time.
According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, only 4.6 rapists out of every 1000 sexual assaults in the US will serve jail time.
