Justin Amash, Republican member of Congress, who has been criticizing president Donald Trump throughout his presidency, on Saturday claimed that president “has engaged in impeachable conduct.” He has also accused the US Attorney General William Barr of “deliberately mispresenting” the findings of the Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections and intentionally misleading the public about Mueller’s analysis. Amash has recommended Congress to charge Trump with obstruction of justice, which made him the first Republican in Congress to state that the impeachment process is required.
Amash posted on Twitter that Mueller report reveals Trump to have “engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment.”
“In fact, Mueller’s report identifies multiple examples of conduct satisfying all the elements of obstruction of justice, and undoubtedly any person who is not the president of the United States would be indicted based on such evidence,” wrote Amash. He continued: “Few members of Congress even read Mueller’s report; their minds were made up based on partisan affiliations – and it showed, with representatives and senators from both parties issuing definitive statements on the 448-page report’s conclusions within just hours of its release.”
White House and Department of Justice did not comment on Amash’s tweets.
Ronna McDaniel, Republican National Committee Chairwoman, in response to Amash’s tweets wrote, “it’s sad to see… Amash parroting the Democrats’ talking points on Russia.”
“The only people still fixated on the Russia collusion hoax are political foes of Trump hoping to defeat him in 2020 by any desperate means possible,” wrote McDaniel with the reference to Amash’s intentions to run against Trump in 2020 election as a libertarian. “Voters in Amash’s district strongly this President, would rather their Congressman work to support the President’s policies that have brought jobs, increased wages and made life better for Americans,” she added.
