After US President Donald Trump’s comments about accepting information on political rivals from foreign governments many Democrats have blasted the President. Yet, Republicans have brought up the infamous Steele dossier.
What is the Steele dossier?
It is a series of notes by former British Intelligence officer Christopher Steele claiming that Trump and his campaign officials had deep ties to Russia. However, none of the claims from the dossier has been confirmed by former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 22-month long investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential elections.
What did Republicans say about the dossier?
Lindsey Graham, Republican Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said, “We had a major American political party hire a foreign national, Christopher Steele, to dig up dirt on an American presidential candidate. As if that was not bad enough, the foreign national compiled an unverified dossier that was then used by the FBI to obtain a warrant against an American citizen and surveil an American presidential campaign.”
Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Leader, stated that “the Democratic presidential campaign send $6 million to a foreign entity to travel the world and find something. When they could not find something, they made false accusations, salacious accusations at that, drove this country into a special counsel lasting more than 22 months, using this false information, sending it to the FBI and went to get a FISA court then to spy upon Americans.”
Although many have argued that the situation with Steele is different as he was hired by Fusion GPS and performed certain services, research in particular, and the US law “does not prohibit paying foreigners to perform services,” it is worth keeping in mind that it was an anti-Trump research funded by Clinton Campaign.
