Oleg Tishchenko, Russian national accused in the US of attempting to smuggle F-16 fighter jet manuals out of the country, was deported to Russia Wednesday, Russian news agency TASS reported.
Tishchenko was charged in the US in absentia in 2016 and sentenced to 12 months in federal prison. He was arrested in July 2018 in Georgia and then extradited to the US. As the term of 12 months was spent in pretrial detention, Tishchenko was deported to Russia Wednesday. According to the court filing, homeland security agents transported the Russian citizen to the Salt Lake International Airport for self-deportation.
The charges against Tishchenko were described as ‘contrived’. “We are deeply disappointed by this practice of the US authorities. We urge to reject it in order to create efficient cooperation between law enforcement agencies of the two states,” said the Russian embassy in the US.
