‘Russian meddling’ in Alabama: Pussy Riot in Birmingham to raise money for local groups fighting against anti-abortion law

Russian feminist protest rock band ‘Pussy Riot’ came to Alabama to support groups fighting against the abortion banning law, reported ABC News.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and her band are now in Birmingham and are preparing to give a number of performances to raise money for local activists. In an interview with ABC news Tolokonnikova said she was “very angry” about Alabama laws.

“I woke up one morning very angry about Alabama’s extreme laws.”

In May state of Alabama passed a so-called “fetal heartbeat” law, which bans abortions if the heartbeat of the fetus is detected, making no exceptions for rape or incest victims. A number of other states in America followed Alabama’s footsteps and passed similar legislations, yet the Alabama’s bill is considered to be the most restrictive.

“Right now we live in a global world,” said Tolokonnikova. “In a globalized world it’s no longer enough to say, ‘that doesn’t relate to me’. Politicians, people everywhere are connected.”

Russian feminist, who was convicted of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” for her performance in a Moscow Cathedral, spent almost two years in prison. She recollects that the letters she received while in prison encouraged her a lot and now she believes she would encourage Alabama’s activists to keep on fighting.

Tolokonnikova also said she was afraid that the Russian President Vladimir Putin may follow the US and ban abortions in Russia. “Putin points a lot at policy of United States. Even though he hates it, for some reason he prefers to pick the worst from it,” she said.

“I’m just scared Putin will be like, ‘they ban abortions, why don’t we do the same?'”

According to Tolokonnikova, some members of her team are Mexicans. “It’s the worst nightmare of a white conservative in America,” she said. “Russian and Mexican jump in a plane, come to Alabama protest against abortion law.”
