The U.S. President threatens to impose sanctions on Turkey if Recep Tayyip Erdogan acquises the Russian S-400 missile defense system. But Turkish President reassured that the US said that “there won’t be anything like this (sanctions)“. The U.S. President misunderstood Erdogan as Trump himself did not confirm of unspreading the rule over sanction. In spite of disagreement with the USA, Turkey is waiting for US F-35 stealth fighter jets.
Also, the Turkish President is going to get the S-400 system that costs $1.4 billion, in the beginning of July.
US Defense Secretary Mark Esper pointed that “the pursuit of the S-400 undermines” warm partnership between countries. Such step from Turkish side can cause tension as NATO believes that Russia could spy on aircraft due to the S-400.
To hinder the Turkish government from purchase, the USA threatened to put the sanctions on it. Before the G20 summit Erdogan tried to dissuade from his decision, pointing “If NATO allies are now imposing sanctions on each other, I don’t know anything about that. These are not impressions I got from the talks I have had with Mr. Trump until now.“
