U.S. suspended Turkey from F-35 fighter jets production

News

On Wednesday the US authorities announced that Turkey would be removed from the component production program for the newest American F-35 fighter jets. Washington has warned about the consequences for Ankara in the case of the delivery of Russian air defense systems S-400 to Turkey.

The first batches of S-400 complexes were delivered to the Murted Air Base in Ankara last Friday. The U.S. has been trying to prevent the supply of Russian air defense to Turkey which is part of NATO for several months.

The U.S. and other F-35 partners agree to remove Turkey from participation in the program and begin the process of formally excluding Turkey from this program,” Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment  Ellen Lord said.

According to Lord, the replacement of the supply chain in the production of jet fighters will cost 500-600 million dollars for the U.S.. Turkey produces more than 900 parts and components required for the assembly of the F-35. Lord reported that the production of these parts will be transferred from Turkey to the United States.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry called this decision “unfair” and again warned that it would negatively affect relations between the two countries.

Turkey, unfortunately, due to this decision will lose jobs and potential economic opportunities,” Lord said, adding that Turkey’s total losses could amount to more than $9 billion, as a result of such move.
