Attorney General William Barr appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday to testify about his handling of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference into the 2016 presidential elections and alleged obstruction of justice the president. Right before that, Mueller released a letter he had written to Attorney General, criticizing how Barr handled the obstruction of justice part of the report.
Donald Trump commented on Attorney General’s performance during the hearing, which took four hours, saying “He’s an outstanding man, he’s an outstanding legal mind. He performed incredibly well today.”
Trump stated in an interview with Fox Business “He did a fantastic job today, I’m told. I got to see some of it. He did a fantastic job.”
President also defended AG’s decision not to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, as chairman of the committee, Jerry Nadler, wanted Barr to be questioned both by lawmakers and committee staffers. According to Trump, Committee members “want to treat him differently than they have anybody else.”
“For many, many years, they’ve never done it this way where they’re bringing in outside counsel or something, you know, you elect people they’re supposed to be able to do their own talking,” Trump said.
After Barr’s testimony on Wednesday, some Democratic presidential candidates, including Julian Castro, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker, called on him to resign.
