Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Wednesday that Russia’s role in the Group of Eight may be restored only after expert discussions, reported Russian News Agency TASS.

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he would support the decision to let Russia return. “Russia should be in this meeting,” Trump said. “They should let Russia come back in, because we should have Russia at the negotiating table.”

According to media reports, President Trump had a phone conversation with the French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders agreed that Russia should be invited to the G-7 meeting next year when it is held in the US.

Some have suggested that President Macron was just trying to embarrass President Trump when suggested to allow Russia back, as he wanted Trump to publicly push for Russia. Others say that both the US and France want to stabilize their relations with Russia, therefore, discuss its possible return to the group.

When asked whether or not Russia would return to the G-8, Zakharova stated that “at the moment it’s hard to understand what it is all about.”

“Initiatives need to be outlined and handed over to Russia for consideration… So if the G-7 wants to position itself as a serious platform, the discussion should be moved from the media field to the expert level.”
